31 Jul

A year ago today I was in a kennel with my two brothers and a few other pups, just another typical day. That afternoon, a few strange people I had never smelled before came into the home where my kennel was and talked to the man who had been taking care of me. I had turned 8 weeks old a few days before and thought that I knew the way the world worked and was an adult, boy was I wrong. The man scooped my up and put me in the arms of the human I would soon come to call mom. I looked in her eyes, eyes that looked just like mine, and decided “I want her! I want her to be my human.” Luckily for me, she wanted me too.

Baby me!

Baby me!

Fast forward to today, and I’m a year older, a year smarter, and a whole lot cuter (in my opinion). I am in my forever home and loving every minute of it. That is why my mom and I decided it would be appropriate to celebrate my adoption anniversary with a party. Which is why, on Sunday, I will be having my “Gotcha” party. I’m very excited because having a place to call home, humans to call my own, a comfy bed and food everyday is something to celebrate. If you have ever thought about giving an animal a forever home, check out your local shelters. The shelters around my area, The Humane Society of Knox County and the Camden Rockport Animal Rescue League house lots of cats and dogs looking for loving families.

I wish I could talk about all the exciting details of my party, but I don’t want to give everything away. I will, eventually post everything, but I thought I’d end this post with a few teasers.

How Cute!

30 Jul

Usually I don’t like talking about cats much. It’s not that I don’t like them, in fact, I think that the stereotypical hate between cats and dogs is really a lie. Just look at Milo and Otis.

Best friends!

Anyway, I like cats, I have cats in my family, but they steal the attention away from me so I find them to be annoying. But, there’s this video that I watched that made me think that cats can be somewhat enjoyable. Still, it’s only somewhat.

Pups and Lobsters

29 Jul

There are a lot of things that humans do that I just don’t understand. Like taking baths everyday. Stink is something to appreciate, not cover. Sometimes my mom smells so sweet and clean it makes me sneeze. Anyway, my humans have been getting all excited over something called “The Lobster Festival.” It’s apparently like a big party for a creature that lives in the water. I met a lobster once and he wasn’t all that friendly. In fact, he was incredibly boring and just kind of sat there.

I don't get it.

I don't get it.

My mom and nanny decided to go down and check it out. I decided to stay home. Well, actually I was told I had to stay home. It was probably for the best though because crowds scare me. So, because I wasn’t there, my mom took it upon herself to document the various pups that decided to party with the humans.

Now, as I said before, these type of human activities draw crowds. That can be very overwhelming for some pups. So, before you leash up your various fur children and drag them down, make sure you know what your pup’s limit is. Bring water (it can get very hot!), bags for potties, and plenty of patience.

Busy as a Bee

27 Jul

Today was errand day, as it seems to be every other day. There is always something that humans need to get, or pay for, or mail. I know I’m a hyper pup, but watching my mom and nanny running around town makes me dog tired. In fact, I’m a few seconds away from passing out on the couch.

Usually, my mom takes me around with her when she has to do her “important business.” That always makes me chuckle because when I have business to take care of, it usually means a trip to the yard, not to the bank. By the way, banks seem like a silly thing. I know tons of dogs who bury their important things, not put them in a sucky tube thing. I wonder where that goes, and why, when it returns, there is always a treat inside of it for me. I can never eat that treat though, my mom says it has wheat in it and would make me sick. Party pooper.

Speaking of parties, that’s what the main reason for shopping today was. We had to get party favors for all of my friends. I won’t reveal too much though, because I don’t want to spoil the surprise. I met tons of fellow dogs who were out and about enjoying the some what good weather. A really friendly pup was in The Loyal Biscuit, but I didn’t catch its name. I also met two poodles while my nanny was sending a fax (what ever that is). One was black and one was white. The white one was my age and very, very hyper. That’s why her mom had the black one over for a sleep over to see if they could adopt her into the family. They were very nice, but the white one kept jumping on my back and annoying me. I also saw a Newfoundland, but didn’t get to met him. He was big! My grampy likes to call them “Goofy Newfies.”

What I can say we purchased today was a bag of Acana Grasslands for me and a toy for Gracie Lynn and Harry. It’s from a company called Multipet International INC (but we got it at the Biscuit).

"Bite Me"

"Bite Me"

Isn’t it cute? It’s filled with catnip, which Harry loves. So far, neither of them seem to have bothered much with it, but that’s because they are sleeping. Multipet also has a version for dogs, but instead of catnip, there is a squeaker.

Interview with a Cousin

26 Jul

It’s time for another interview with some of my favorite humans! This time, it’s with one of my cousins. Well, she’s actually my second cousin, but it’s easier to just call her my cousin. Her name is Lizzie!

Liz 'n me!

Liz 'n me!

How do you know me?: Your mommy is my cousin!

Do you have any furry children?: No, my mom doesn’t really like pets. She says that she’d be the one caring for it. I think that’s what every parent says.

What is your favorite treat?: Chocolate! Which you can’t have. Or you would die.

If you were a dog, what kind would you be and why?: I think I would have to be a dalmatian, because I would get to wear spots!

A dalmation

A dalmation

Where do you like to shop?: I like to shop at American Eagle, or anywhere, really!

What is your favorite toy?: My favorite toy is my laptop, because I can use it for everything!

Where do you like to take walkies?: I prefer to take walks on my road, but I’ve walked so far so many times that I like to walk different places now, too.

What are you afraid of?: I am afraid of bugs, bugs, bugs. They are the worst things ever!

Do you like to swim?: I like to swim, I’m just not good at it. Let’s just say, I’m no Michael Phelps.

How do you feel about cats?: Um, well…cats hate me. I like them better at kitten size, that way they can’t eat me whole.

Do you love me?: Hmmm…yes! I love how you’re always thrilled when I come to your house. You’re one-of-a-kind!

You’re one of a kind too, Liz. Thanks for letting me interview you!

All That Glitters

24 Jul

During one of my mother’s various searches through the internet, she stumbled upon something very interesting.

Pretty isn't it?

Pretty isn't it?

That ring is from a company called LifeGem which specializes in turning the remains of the dearly departed into wearable jewelry. They also catered to humans whose fur children have passed on. I have yet to experience having a close friend (human or otherwise) pass away, so haven’t experienced that kind of grief. I know my mom has had a few fur babies before my time who have since passed away, but she never though of making them into something wearable. So, what say you?

Happy tail wags!

Tasty but Deadly

22 Jul

Some of you may have heard, but my mom is throwing me a adoption anniversary party (I’ve been in my forever home for a year!) in two weeks. In preparation of the big event, my mom hired my aunt to make me a cake. My aunt now runs an out of the kitchen bakery called Sweet Cheek’s Treats. My aunt has to be very careful about the type of food that she puts into my cake. I know I already talked about how I can’t eat wheat, but there are some foods that dogs, in general, should not eat at all. Here is a list of poisonous foods for dogs, and why they are poisonous:

+ Chocolate: Chocolate contains a chemical that can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and it could be potentially fatal. So that means no chocolate bars, chocolate chips, or anything with chocolate in it.

Don't be fooled by how tasty they look!

Don't be fooled by how tasty they look!

+ Coffee and Caffeine: Since both come from the cacao seed, the same seed that chocolate comes from, coffee and caffeine have the same effect as chocolate. No Starbucks or soda for us furry kids.

+ Alcohol: One time, my nanny put a glass of wine down on the ground when we were outside at a picnic. I had a taste and my mom was very upset, and she should be. Alcohol can cause vomiting, breathing difficulties, decreased coordination skills, tremors, coma, and again, it could be fatal.

+ Avocado [edited]: The pulp of an avocado is okay for a pup, but the pit and the skin are dangerous. Some avocado is actually used in dog foods.

The evil avocado!

Remember, pulp not skin or seed.

+ Macadamia nuts: The signs of macadamia nut poisoning can usually be seen within 12 hours after a pooch has eaten one, and it usually lasts anywhere from 12 hours to 2 days. The symptoms are weakness, depression, vomiting and tremors.

+ Grapes and Raisins: Though some fruits are good for pups, these are not. If ingested, grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure.

+ Onions, Garlic and Chives [edited] : These are tricky. Used in small amounts, garlic can actually be beneficial. If eaten in large amounts, they can cause aplastic anemia.

If you suspect your dog has eaten any of these, don’t hesitate to call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435.

Now please enjoy a cute video of a puppy whistling. I bet my mom’s glad I don’t have that talent.

The Beach

21 Jul

One of my favorite place to take walkies is the beach. I’ve gotten to walk on a lot of beaches, from salt water to fresh. My favorite beach is Crockett’s beach in Owl’s Head. My mom took me there yesterday. We had tons of fun chasing the waves and barking at the seagulls. Well, I did the barking, not my mom. As we were getting ready to leave, I spotted a puppy getting out of his car. Naturally, I went and said hello. His name was Rex and he was an 11 month old Labrador. The funny thing is, his birth mom was a yellow lab and his birth father was a chocolate lab, yet Rex is a black lab!

I hope where ever Rex is today that he is having fun and getting lots of kisses!

Campfire, Chicken, and Friends.

20 Jul

Last night, my mom and nanny took me to our friend Trina and Les’ house for a visit. I love Trina and Les. They are the parents of Shadow, Beau and Teal, so they are very friendly to us pups and just love it when I come over to visit. I use to be very scared of Les, but now we are the best of friends.

Trina 'n me!

I spent most of last night playing with my best friend Shadow. He can be awfully grumpy sometimes, but he’s a lot of fun. My mom even enjoys to play with him sometimes.

We all hung out on the porch to enjoy the sun. Every so often my mom would sneak me and Shadow some chicken, she’s the best.

Shadow likes to sleep under the table.

Trina just loves her garden, so she took us on a tour. She has tons of flowers and vegetables (ick!). I also saw my two favorite labs who were in their outdoor kennel.

This flower smells nice.

Speaking of Beau and Teal, whenever guest arrive, Beau gets so excited that he jumps for joy, literally.

I love Beau so very much. He’s a big ball of energy. When Les finally let them out to play, after much whining on my part, we chased each other like crazy.

As the sun set, Les started up a fire and we all sat around it enjoying the heat. I curled up in the grass and took a nap. It was a good day.

Once upon a time…

Recently, at a zoo in Taiyuan, China, a Red Panda gave birth to a pair of cubs.

Sadly, the mom wouldn’t take care of them. Luckily for the cubs, a local dog had also just given birth to a litter of pups. So, the red panda handlers put the cubs in with the baby pups and the mom took to them like they were her own.
