A Poem

28 Dec

My dogs live here, they’re here to stay.

You don’t like pets, be on your way.

They share my home, my food, my space;

this is their home, this is their place.

You will find dog hair on the floor,

they will alert you’re at the door.

They may request a little pat;

a simple “no” will settle that.

It gripes me when I hear you say,

“Just how is it you live this way?

They smell, they shed, they’re in the way.”

Who asked you? is all I can say.

They love me more than anyone,

my voice is like the rising sun;

they merely have to hear me say

“C’mon girls, time to go and play.”

Then tails wag and faces grin,

they bounce and hop and make a din.

They never say “no time for you;”

they’re always there, to go and do.

And if I’m sad? They’re by my side.

And if I’m mad? They circle wide.

And if I laugh, they laugh with me;

they understand, they always see.

So once again, I say to you,

Come visit me, but know this, too.

My dogs live here, they’re here to stay.

You don’t like pets, be on your way.

They share my home, my food, my space;

this is their home, this is their place.

Happy tail wags!

Merry Christmas!

25 Dec

Merry Christmas tail wags everyone!

Smells Good!

23 Dec

Because I have no money, seeing as I am a dog, I asked mom if I could make some treats to give my friends as Christmas gifts. She thought it was a splendid idea because she had been wanting to try out a new recipe she had found.

***

Gingerbread Snowmen (for dogs!)

1 1/2 cup oat flour

1 1/2 cup rice

1 tsp (that means teaspoon) baking powder

1 tsp ginger

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp baking soda

1 egg

1/4 cup safflower oil

1/2 cup molasses

1/4 cup peanut butter

1 tbsp (that’s tablespoon) apple cider vinegar

1 cup carob chips (to drizzle)

Have your human preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Combine all of the ingredients thoroughly. If it looks a little too runny, add more of either the oat or rice flour. Roll out the dough on a surface dusted with either the oat or rice flour. Use a snowman (or any shape) cookie cutter to cut out cookies. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. You can put them close together because they don’t spread out to much. Bake 17-19 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Let cool. Microwave carob chips for about 1 minute 30 seconds or until melted. Place in a ziplock bag. Snip a cornerand drizzle carob onto cookies. Let harden. Store at room temp in a covered container.

***

Remember, carob looks like chocolate, but it doesn’t contain the chemical that makes chocolate poisonous to dogs so it’s okay in moderation. Also, don’t let your pup eat any of the uncooked dough as baking powder and baking soda are bad for pooches before being baked in something.

Looks good! Smells good too.

Cute little snowmen

They look so good covered in carob!

I get to taste? Don't mind if I do!

Hope you all enjoy baking up some delicious treats!

Happy tail wags.

Snow Storm

20 Dec

We get a lot of snow storms in Maine in the winter. Usually we hunker down in the house, throw on some warm clothes, and sleep. Today was different. Our friends Trina and Les invited mom, nanny, and I down to their house for a snow storm party. Of course we jumped at the chance because we love to hang out with them. But what do you do at a snow storm party? I’ll show you!

Chew on yummy marrow bones.

Hang out by the Christmas tree.

Pose for pictures.

Lots of pictures!

Play in the snow.

Take tons of naps.

Happy, snowy, tail wags!

Last Minute

19 Dec

Christmas is quickly approaching, but what to do if you still need to buy something for that special pup or kitty in your life? Well, dear human, I have put together a list of very cute last minute gifts just for that reason. Most are just ideas to get your shopping juices flowing because, as mom informed me, the last shipping day for Christmas was Thursday. It can also inspire you for next year!

For those pups that haven’t been up to Santa Paw’s nice standard, there is a really cute toy called the Bag of Coal. Each bag contains five plushy lumps of coal, some with squeakers, some without.

For the very inquisitive and intelligent pups there is a Hide A Toy gingerbread house by The Kyjen Company to keep curious minds busy. You hide the gingerbread man, the cube, and the bone in the house and your pup has to figure out how to get them out.

One of my new favorite places to shop is called Planet Dog. My mom recently went to one of their stores and picked me up some Christmas goodies. I hope one of the things she got was the Orbee-Tuff Mint. It’s a rubbery chew toy that is bouncy and fun to gnaw on. Best of all, for you humans at least, it is mint flavored so it helps combat sticky dog breath. What about something warm to keep the chilly winter weather away from you pup. The Smiling Frog currently has the cutest fleecy shirt for sale called the I Heart You Fleece. You can order anything from The Smiling Frog and have it arrive for Christmas until the 21st!

For the kitties in your life, check out these Catnip Candy Canes and these fun Ho-Ho Hairballs. Both from barker & meowsky.

Happy tail wags!

Yum!

17 Dec

Today I got a package in the mail. Well, my mom got the package, but I knew it was for me. I could smell something delicious inside. It was a free sample of treats from the company Dogswell called Breathies. Breathies are made with cage-free chicken, parsley, cinnamon, rosemary, and peppermint. The peppermint and parsley are what give “Breathies” their name because they can help to keep a dog’s breath fresh. The green color comes from added chlorophyll. But, how do they taste?

They look awfully tasty.

I gave it a tentative nibble, and it was delicious! I ate four of them, and was ready for more, but my mom said I had had enough. It’s still up for debate as to whether they will freshen my stinky breath, but I don’t really care about that.

Happy, yummy tail wags!

P.S. If you check out one of my favorite blogs, Pawcurious, you’ll see a familiar face for one of the Twelve Days of Petmas!

Polished

14 Dec

Humans always seem to get the giggles when they see my front claws. Why? you may ask. Well, let me show you. As you can see, my claws have been painted. They are very chipped right now, and I was a little embarrassed when mom wanted to take a photo. She hasn’t had time to redo them, what with the arrival of Santa Paws getting closer and closer.

There are two questions humans always ask when they see my pink claws. The first is usually about whether or not it is safe for me. While there are dog specific nail polishes, mom uses a human polish called Zoya.

The shade I use is Renee.

Zoya is free of any toxins, so it is quite safe for me (even though I would never dream of licking my wet claws).

And of course everyone asks whether or not I sit still and let my mom paint my claws. Most of the time I do, especially since my mom gives me tons of treats for all my hard work. But, I am also still quite a puppy so my attention span is very short. I get distracted quite a lot and try to move which causes my mom to say some naughty words because the nail polish gets on her bed. Luckily for my mom, that doesn’t happen too often.

Happy tail wags!

Sit, Stay

10 Dec

During my searches through the internet, I have stumbled on quite a few videos of dogs doing fun tricks. I have mastered the old standbys “sit”, “down”, and “paw” which always seems to be a crowd pleaser, but these pups have gone above and beyond. Check ‘em out for yourself!

This Pug takes “play dead” to a whole new, dramatic level.

This Husky has quite the singing voice.

Now if only this Pug could make a smoothie.

Paige the Border Collie is definitely my trick role model.

This one is my favorite!

Happy tail wags!

Dear Santa Paws

8 Dec

Dear Santa Paws,

I hope you’re staying warm way up North. It gets awfully cold here, so I can’t even imagine how it is on the North Pole. Maybe Mrs. Paws has knitted you a nice sweater to keep you warm. That would be very nice of her.

I have a very short list of things I would like for Christmas. Mom says you have tons of little elves that help you make all the presents. That’s handy. I wish I had my own elves so I could make them do things like stop Gracie Lynn from meowing in the middle of the night and waking me up. Hey, maybe you could spare me a couple of elves!

Anyway, the collar that I am wearing is a bit worn out so I would be very grateful if you could get me a new one. There is a very cute one from The Mod Dog that I have had my eye on.

So cute.

I would also really like some new treats. I like the ones I have, but a pup likes a little variation in her life. Maybe Mrs. Paws could whip some up for me. I really like peanut butter, sweet potato, cheese, and chicken, but not necessarily all together. Well, I’ve never had them all together, so I could very well like that combination.

The final thing on my list is to get extra hugs and kisses on Christmas. I do love attention! Of course that is a very hard thing to wrap, so maybe you could just tell my family to really spoil me. That would be very nice.

Good luck on your journey to all the good little puppies. I will leave you a yummy biscuit on the table so you don’t get too hungry on your travels.

Love,

Prudence.

Holiday Hazards

2 Dec

I know I do a lot of these safety posts, but sometimes I find it’s good to have little reminders during all the fun times in life to just be aware so the fun doesn’t quickly become hazardous. December is definitely a time to be a bit more cautious because of all the exciting parties and holidays. So here’s a quick rundown of some holiday hazards to keep your eyes on.

The Christmas Tree

For those of you that celebrate the coming of Santa Paws by putting up a tree in the house, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. The first in the water for the tree. Because the tree stand looks like a big ole water dish to us dogs (cats too!) be careful what goes in it. Some humans use chemical preservers and, while most are non-toxic, it could very well make a dog or cat vomit. Make sure you keep the tree skirt secured around the tree so your fur baby can’t get to the water. Also, to some of us, this tree looks like a big old toy for us to play with. I know Harry was quite prone to climbing our Christmas tree, and luckily never knocked it down. To try and prevent accidents, tie the tree, with fishing line, to a hook in the wall behind the tree.

I know you humans like your glittering bobbles, especially around this time of year. For the ornaments that go on the tree, keep the most fragile and precious near the top of the tree so curious paws and excited tails can’t knock them off. If an ornament is to break, quickly take any animals away from the glass and clean it up. If a piece is stepped on or swallowed, immediately take the animal to the vet. The same idea goes for tinsel. Cats are extremely attracted to that shiny stuff, so if you must have it, make sure it stays out of the cat’s way.

Candy

Like Halloween, this time of year brings lots of treats, including candy. As before, keep any candy out of reach and away from pooches and kitties (especially chocolate).

Electrical Cords

Lights seem to be a big deal. The tree is wrapped in them, there are electric candles in the window, people even put them outside. The big hazard is that some fur babies like to nibble and gnaw on electrical wires which can lead to a nasty shock. To prevent this, tape them to the floor (the wires, not your pets, silly!) or run them through a protective cover. If all else fails, spraying a little Bitter Apple on them will keep most animals away.

Presents

Ribbon can be very entertaining for animals, but can be a choking hazard so just keep an eye on any pet who is playing with it. Some presents come in packages in the mail and are covered in foamy bits. Keep those out of the reach of curious noses, especially ferrets. They love to eat packing peanuts!

Hope everyone continues to have a safe and festive holiday season!

Happy tail wags.
