The Versatile Blogger

12 Aug

The other day, Pup Fan, one of the regular commenters on this blog, informed me that she had awarded me the Versatile Blogger Award on her blog I Still Want More Puppies. Not only am I incredibly excited, but I am also so tail-waggingly happy. It seems mom and I have hit the second year slump when it comes to blogging, so being told that we are a blog that someone really enjoys reading to the point where they give us an award, well that just makes a slump a little less slumpy. So thank you Pup Fan for giving me this really great honor! It’s as good as a really stinky bully stick.

There are a few rules that go along with being a Versatile Blogger, the first being to thank the blogger that gave you the award. Thank you again Pup Fan and I Still Want More Puppies! The second rule is to list seven things about yourself. So here goes:

  1. When my kitty brother and cousin get in to trouble, I love to tattle on them to the humans. I run back and forth from where ever the kitties are to a nearby human until it gets their attention and they go to investigate. The cats hate it which makes me love it even more.
  2. I tend to get along better with dogs that are a bit bigger than me than dogs that are my size or smaller. This makes mom happy as she’s always wanted to adopt a big Goldendoodle.
  3. During the afternoon, I have to have all the curtains open in my and mom’s bedroom so I can spy on the neighbors and the people and dogs that walk on the street. If the curtains are closed, I pretend to have to go potty so I’m taken outside.
  4. If I want your attention, I will scratch your arm until I get it.
  5. In the morning, the first thing I love to do is go out in the living room and roll around on one of the couches. I also make this snorting noise that my mom says sounds like a pig. I’ve never met a pig so I can’t say if that’s true or not.
  6. One of my favorite food toppings (besides chicken of course) is cheese. Sometimes my mom will shave off a tiny little bit of Parmesan cheese onto my Honest Kitchen food. It’s chop-licking good!
  7. I actually like visiting my vet, Dr. S. I drag mom through the door every time we go for a visit! Of course, going into one of the exam rooms isn’t exactly a trip to the dog park, but sitting in the waiting room means lots of head scratches from the staff and new dogs to sniff.

The last requirement is to list ten blogs that are new or somewhat new discoveries for you and that you think are really great and that others would enjoy. Obviously if I could I would list all the blogs I love, but there are more than ten and the majority of them I’ve been reading for awhile. Of course you can always find my favorite blogs on the right-side column of this blog under the “Blogroll” category.

Puppies on Parade

10 Aug

Like last year, the annual Lobster Festival happened in my town over the weekend. One of the many attractions for the humans that travel from far and wide is the giant parade that takes place on Saturday. Usually lasting around two hours, the parade features floats, funny cars, the newly crowned Sea Goddess, and this year, lots of doggies! Per usual, I was left at home due to my fear of giant crowds and loud noises (usually thanks to the fire trucks). Luckily for me, my reporter in the field (also known as my mother) was more than happy to document all the four-legged watchers and participants.

There was a very cute puppy in attendance.

A lot of people walked their dogs around before the parade.

I'm slightly jealous of the Pomeranian's flowing hair.

And those were just some of the furry spectators! There were even more pups in the parade itself.

This pup is backing some politicians (lets hope those stickers don't take off too much fur)

As was this cute pooch.

Hope this puppy doesn't get motion sickness.

Something makes me think this isn't a real dog.

This pup may just be the cutest!

Even the Humane Society of Knox County got in on the float fun. Not only did they have fun signs, cheerful people promoting adoption, but they also had a bone-afide celebrity; Fenway the Dock Dog and The Loyal Biscuit’s store pooch!

The HSKC had a banner with some information about the shelter.

Fenway and her mom Heidi.

The volunteer mobile!

Though I was a little bummed to have missed the fun, I was somewhat glad that I didn’t have to sit impatiently for the two hours with all the scary commotion. If you’re thinking about taking your dog to a parade, make sure you are sure that they will be comfortable and safe. Bring water (it may be hot), clean-up stuff for accidents, and be vigilant of candy that is often tossed to parade watchers; we wouldn’t want Fido snacking on a stray tootsie roll.

I would love to hear in the comments if anyone and/or their pooches have been in a parade. I think it would be fun (and it would get me lots of attention!).

Popeye Part Two

9 Aug

The other day an absolutely delightful e-mail showed up in my mom’s inbox for me. It was from none other than my pal Popeye the spunky, cart-needing pooch I wrote a blog post about a little over a year ago. He wrote to me to let me know that he and his foster mom are finalists in Petfinder’s World’s Best Pet Parent Contest.

The World’s Best Parent Contest is a chance for those who enter to win $10,000 for the shelter or rescue of their choice. Popeye is hoping to give the prize money to Walkin’ the Bark Rescue in California. Walkin’ the Bark Rescue is run solely by volunteers and usually takes in those harder-to-adopt cases. In fact, Popeye himself is one of their rescued dogs.

The contest runs until September 28th and the winner is chosen by whoever has the most votes. This is where we come in. If you go here, you can vote for Popeye to help him win. If you aren’t a member of Petfinder, you will have to sign up, a process which takes only a few seconds. After that, you are free to vote as many times as you like until September 28th. Of course you can browse the other finalists and vote for them if you like, but I know my votes are going to Popeye.

If you would like to learn more about Walkin’ the Bark Rescue, you can visit their Petfinder page here and if you are on facebook, you can friend Popeye who also has a page. Please don’t forget to vote and make sure you spread the word. With our help we can help Popeye win.

Food Drive

3 Aug

Since the 19th of July, Be the Change for Pets has challenged everyone to be the change by donating food and supplies to local shelters for their Dog Days of Summer Food Drive. Though the food drive was suppose to end on the 31st, it was extended to August 7th. That was great news for slacking and absent-minded humans like mine.

To participate, all you have to do is pick a shelter, pet food bank, or rescue that you want to make a donation to, buy some food, collect towels or blankets, get any supplies a shelter might be in need of, and just make your delivery! If you want to document your donation, just print out a Be the Change flier and have someone snap your photo with the flier and the donation. You can then upload your photos onto the Be the Change for Pets’ facebook page.

Because Friday was the 2nd anniversary of when I was brought to live with my humans, mom and I decided to take the money she would have spent celebrating my “Gotcha Day” and spend it on our donation. We picked up a big bag of Nutro dog food and four cans of Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul kitty food to give to the Humane Society of Knox County, our local shelter. Obviously it was kind of hard to not only give up potential presents but to also have to see some food that could fill my belly be given away. I am slowly starting to understand how important it is to give, especially to those (four-legged or not) who are in need, and dogs and kitties looking for their forever homes are definitely in need.

Has anyone made or is anyone thinking about making a donation for the Dog Days of Summer Food/Supplies Drive?

Surprises Leave Me Pretty in Pink

2 Aug

As we all know, I absolutely love getting surprises. If I were to get a surprise in the mail everyday I may just tolerate the mailman walking on my porch. On Friday I didn’t mind his presence too much as he held a brown package with my name on it!The great humans at Eco-Pup dog clothing sent me one of their very cute, incredibly stylish Charm hoodies! I blogged about Eco-Pup back in February after winning the Benny Polo they were auctioning off for Hounds for Haiti. Ever since then, mom and I routinely check Eco-Pup’s website and coo (her) or drool (me) at all the eco-friendly and recycled products. The Charm hoodie was definitely one of my favorites especially because I’ve been twittering so much and the little blue birdie is twitter’s mascot. It’s like Eco-Pup could read my mind!

Eco-Pup was started in 2008 by a woman named Susanne Postill. She, like my mom and Angelica, wanted her Peke-Poo to be warm and comfortable but couldn’t find any unique and cute clothing that wasn’t synthetic and all the natural and organic clothing just didn’t vibe with her pup’s sense of style; so the company was born.

It’s not only the materials used that are eco-friendly, but also some of the company’s practices. Packing boxes are reused, hang-tags, business cards, and catalogs are all printed on eco-friendly paper, they try to handle as many customer interactions electronically to cut back on paper usage, they recycle as much as possible, and they use biodegradable poop bags for their doggy employees. The fabric used is either recycled, organic cotton, or bamboo. The recycled fabrics are 100% Recycled PET. This means that the fabric is made with recycled plastic bottles (makes you really think about the bottles you put in the recycling bin). The cotton is organic in terms of the way it is farmed and manufactured: organic compost is used in lieu of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides are replaced with beneficial insects, and weeding is used instead of herbicide. Bamboo fabric is made from a tropical grass, is 100% biodegradable, and hypoallergenic. My Charm hoodie is made from organic cotton fleece. It’s super soft and lightweight. Oh, and did I mention the cutest part?

It has a blue bow on the hood!

As it is still summer and too warm for any kind of clothing (except maybe a bathing suit. But if I ever do go swimming, I prefer to skinny dip), I will have to wait to wear my hoodie. It will be quite an impatient wait as all I want to do is strut my little tail around town in my pink, birdie splendor.

Happy tail wags and thank you Eco-Pup!

FTC disclaimer: The Charm Hoodie was gifted to me by Eco-Pup Dog Clothing.
