I’m a Salty Dog

20 Dec

The biggest thing I’ve learned from having a run-in with a skunk many months ago (besides stop having run-ins with skunks, of course) is that even after about a million bathes and an entire bottle of Nature’s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover, I still had some lingering eau de Pepé le Pew. While it didn’t really bother me all that much, the humans on the other hand were less than happy. It was time to seek professional help.

Enter Salty Dog Salon Inc. operated by Jillian Jones and Deborah McClean. I already knew Jillian from the quarterly nail clipping clinics at The Loyal Biscuit. In fact, she’s the only human I let clip my nails (with only minor struggling). I don’t even let my mom do that! Anyway, after both Jillian and her mother Deb graduated from A+ Pet Grooming Academy in Grey, Maine, they started a small grooming salon out of their own home. It was only recently that they officially moved their business, Salty Dog Salon Inc. to it’s own space (which happens to be not too far from my home). The salon is bright, peaceful, and very tastefully decorated (according to my mom that is; dogs don’t know all that much about decorating). The grooming area (which we saw during Salty Dog’s holiday open house) is impeccably clean.  Among their many grooming options, Salty Dog has a specialty deskunking bath which is what I was given. My mom dropped me off (much to my dismay) and did errands for an hour while Jillian and Deb worked their magic. By the time the hour was up, I was bathed, flouffed, and smelling like citrus and cinnamon with barely a hint of skunk remaining. My mom was (and still is as it has been a couple of weeks and there is only a small tiny little skunky smell left behind my right ear. Much better than it was before) impressed by not only the deskunking miracle, but also by how friendly and welcoming Salty Dog’s environment and staff are. Plus, look at just how cute and fluffy I was after my day at the salon! If you live near Rockland, Maine and are interested in visiting Salty Dog Salon Inc, you can check out their website and facebook page for contact information. And make sure you tell Jillian and Deb that I sent you!

Pru’s Wooftastic Gift Guide 2011: The Giving Tree

5 Dec

Christmas. While usually just thinking about this holiday and the onslaught of presents sends me into a flurry of tail wags and tapping paws. The humans say I’m selfish for only caring about what’s given to me, and while that is very, very true, I’ve decided that for this years gift guide, not only will I show you that you can spoil your dog (and maybe you) with all the presents his or her selfish heart desires, but also do some good in the process. Each company and products that I feature donate a portion or the entirety of their profits to a pet-based charity.

During this time of the year, humans start looking ahead to the future by purchasing calendars for the upcoming year. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations jump on the bandwagon and release calendars featuring shelter alumni or just shelter supporter’s pets.

The Humane Society of Knox County, a local shelter where my kitty brother Harry came from, has released their own calendar. You can purchase your own for $10 and be assured that all the money goes right back into the shelter to help the animals currently in their care.

Every dog needs a nice collar; something that’s bold and shows off their personality. Fifi Run may just fit the bill. Fifi Run makes edgy but incredibly chic collars with a little bit of an electric 80s feel. The What Would Lassie Do? Collar happens to be my personal favorite (what dog doesn’t emulate Lassie and her heroism?). And the best part? Fifi Run chooses a different dog charity each month to donate 10% of their proceeds to.

My love for Mutt Nose Best is very well known (and no, it’s not just because I’m the face of their new shampoo scent). Mutt Nose is a Maine based company that uses human grade ingredients (most locally sourced) to make some of the yummiest smelling dog shampoos, conditioners, eau de toilettes, nose balm, and ear and eye wipes. They’ve currently released a special edition holiday scent, U Puppermint Puppy that will make your pooch smell like a warm mug of peppermint hot chocolate. Each month, Mutt Nose choose one pet based charity to promote and raise funds for (you can read more about last month’s charity here).

Keeping your dog safe is a top priority for dog owners. Do it in style with another of my favorite products, a blanketID! BlanketID tags are made to help you find your dog in case they are lost not only from them wearing the tag, but also through online support, including emails to local blanketID members and local animal related businesses like hospitals, shelters, and SPCAs. Plus, if someone finds your dog, they only have to type in the code found on the back to find all of your dogs information like your phone number, address, your dog’s allergies, and more. Try fitting that on any other tag! Plus, every time a tag is registered and membership purchased, blanketID puts money into their Blanket Fund to help animals in need (you can see the animals they have helped here). Over 15% of blanketIDs profits go into their Blanket Fund.

Treats are always a doggy crowd pleaser when they are found under the Christmas tree. Some of my favorite treats (though honestly, I don’t really have any non-favorite treats) are Zuke’s Mini Naturals in peanut butter. They are soft little nibblets that are perfect for a training session or to stuff in a toy like a Busy Buddy or Kong Canine Genius. I would rather I just receive them by the handful, but mom usually makes me work for them. The human brains behind Zuke’s decided to start a fund called the Dog and Cat Cancer Fund (DCCFund) in honor of their dogs Oly and Zuke who passed away from cancer.Every year, Zuke’s donates a large percentage of their profits to the DCCFund. Last year alone they donated over $40,000. You can see some of the pets the fund has help here.

No hip pooch is complete without the gift of a leash from a certain fat, red suited jolly human. One of the neatest leash companies around is Found My Animal. All the leashes are hand made is New England by professional rope makers and some are even made from recycled bottles. The bright orange Rescue Leash is not only fabulously colorful, but it’s also made to promote pet adoption (orange is the official color for animal protection awareness). As Found My Animal’s mission is to raise awareness about animal adoption, they donate a fair amount of their profits to different pet-based charities. For example, last Saturday during an event for Rational Animal, for every purchase of a Rescue Leash, Found donated $5 to Rational Animal. You can see more of their charitable work and donations here.

And finally, as a little treat to you humans with a sweet tooth, is Rescue Chocolate. Rescue Chocolate is, as their website states “the sweetest way to save a life.” 100% of the net profits from each of the vegan, kosher, and USA made sweets sold goes to a different animal rescue organization each month. The organization being helped during December is the Animal Farm Foundation. If that doesn’t tempt you into buying, than maybe the funky flavors and inventive names will. What human can turn down a mint and dark chocolate candy bar called Foster-iffic Peppermint? Now remember, these are human-only treats. No dog consumption allowed!

I hope my gift ideas have inspired you to not only gift your friends and furry family members a little something special, but also to think charitably this holiday season.

How Shampoo Can Change the World

8 Nov

A few weeks ago I wrote about and held a contest for Mutt NOSE Best, a Maine based dog shampoo company that features a lot of blueberry based shampoos and conditioners. What I failed to mention, and what is the topic of today’s post, is that every month, Mutt NOSE Best chooses a charity to help raise funds or donations for. Last month, the charity was the Eastern Area Agency on Aging’s Furry Friends Food Bank whose goal is to assist seniors and adults with disabilities feed their pets. For every “like” on their facebook page in the month of October, Mutt NOSE Best donated 1lb of dog food. At the end of the month, Mutt NOSE Best donated 163lbs of food!

This month the focus is on Logan’s Legacy, a fund whose goal is to help human Suzan Morris raise enough money to secure a service dog. Suzan, was diagnosed with MS in 1996 and, through the help of her first service dog Logan, Suzan was able to volunteer and lead a productive life. As Suzan stated in this article by Mutt NOSE Best, “With Logan by my side I was able to maintain my independence and together we participated in life fully. From everyday activities to hospice volunteering to Disneyworld, she made it possible to connect with many people worldwide. She will always be in my heart, the angel by my side…” Sadly, Logan passed away from cancer leaving Suzan heartbroken and in need of another companion.

Suzan and Logan in 2010

It takes lot of time and money to raise and train a service dog. Some of the things that Logan and her successor did and will be able to do for Suzan are things like picking up dropped items like keys and coins, opening and closing doors, carrying small bags or items, getting (though not answering) the phone, etc. Currently Suzan is on a two waiting lists with non-profits that train service dogs. She has to raise roughly $9,500, 26% of which she has raised as of today. Any amount that exceeds her goal will be saved and used as the Logan’s Legacy scholarship fund to help others with disabilities fundraise for a service dog.

For the entire month of November, Mutt NOSE Best will be donating $1 from every bottle sold on their website to Logan’s Legacy. And, as if that was pawesome enough, The Loyal Biscuit Co, one of my all time favorite pet stores, has decided to join the fundraising efforts but sending $1 off every bottle of Mutt NOSE Best sold in their store throughout November to Logan’s Legacy.

If you would like more information about Logan’s Legacy or to make a donation, please visit their Give Forward page as well as their facebook page. And, if you want to buy some of the yummiest smelling shampoo, make sure you visit Mutt NOSE Best’s online store.

Mutt Nose Best Giveaway Winner!

10 Oct

Thank you so much to everyone that entered my Mutt Nose Best giveaway over the weekend. I really wish I could have given you all a set of Mutt Nose Best’s pawesome shampoo, but there could be only one winner. To make things fair (and easy) my mom wrote everyone’s name on a slip of paper (those that did the two extra entry options of subscribing to my blog and liking the Mutt Nose Best facebook page got extra slips) and put them in a teacup. She then drew one slip…. Congratulations to Samantha from Barkzilla (there were two Samanthas so we had to specify). I can’t wait to hear what you and Paddy think of U Berry Calm Puppy!

Splish Splash Get Me Out of This Bath

23 Aug

I usually get a bath once a month, occasionally twice if I run into something especially stinky that I just can’t pass up a roll in. Usually my bathes take place in the kitchen sink. It’s not exactly big enough, but it gets the job done much to my displeasure. So I surprised when, the other day, my mom announced my bath time while we were standing in the middle of The Loyal Biscuit. How was I going to take a bath in the middle of a pet supply store? Well, at the beginning of last spring, The Biscuit opened up a self serve dog wash for their customers and their stinky pets to use for a small fee. The dog wash has two elevated, waist-high, professional dog bathing tubs, two grooming tables, high velocity, pet-safe dryers, a choice of three Tropiclean shampoos and one conditioner, a bunch of grooming supplies, waterproof aprons in The Biscuit’s signature green for the humans, temperature controlled water, fluffy towels and face clothes, and items like ear wash and different sprays to use. Because this was my very first time at the dog wash, I think it was safe to say I was a little more than afraid. I wouldn’t even accept a piece of Wishes from my mom (and those are my absolute favorite). Thankfully my mom went slow and took her time making sure I wouldn’t freak out too much. The shampoo and conditioner come out through the water nozzle, so all you have to do is pick which one to use and spray away. I was suds down with Tropiclean’s Oatmeal shampoo (I’ve been having a slight case of the itches recently) and the available conditioner. Then after the rinsing came the very scary part; the blow drying!

The pet-safe blow dryer isn’t as hot as a human hair dryer so it doesn’t damage a pup’s skin like a human hair dryer would. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t make any less noise! I was praised and given kisses, but that still didn’t stop me from shaking. I managed to let out a little yelp before my mom was finished; she made sure not to take her time on the drying part. After that it was easy sailing with an ear cleaning (The Biscuit has Liquid Health K-9 Ear Solutions available for use) and a brushing and combing. I noticed a set of nail clippers and styptic powder too, but thankfully my mom skipped those this time around.Because of the convenience of The Biscuit’s self serve dog wash, I have a feeling there will be more trips in my future. Heidi, the co-owner even told my mom that she can use the grooming tables when she gives me a hair cut. If you would like more information about the dog wash, check out The Biscuit’s site here. Pet First Aid Awareness Month: The Stinky Kitty

29 Apr

Have you ever seen one of these? I had the pleasure once, but as I was inside, we didn’t get a face to face chat. I guess that was a good thing as skunks have a mean habit of spraying those that approach with a stinky smell. I have no problems being stinky, in fact, I kind of enjoy it. I guess it really upsets the humans though.

Skunk spray isn’t only stinky, it can also pose a danger to your pooch or kitty. Sometimes the spray can get in the curious animal’s eyes causing irritation. If your pet has been sprayed (trust me, you can tell by the smell) and you notice red eyes, tearing, eye rubbing, and above average blinking, they most likely got some in their eyes. As always, a call to your pet’s vet is the most important step to take especially since the oil from the spray can cause other complications like conjunctivitis. After the okay from your vet, you can use sterile saline eye wash to rinse out your pet’s eyes. Now, my mom uses saline solution because she has these little rubber things called contacts. That solution is contact specific. Make sure you use saline eye wash, not the stuff for contacts.

Another thing to check for is wounds. Though a skunks first defense is the spray, they do have sharp teeth and claws. If you see anything, even if it’s little (a small wound could indicate a bite with causes inner damage that isn’t seen from the surface), call your vet. As skunks can also carry rabies, calling your vet is a very important step.

Now, what about the smell? If you don’t already know, water can make the smell even worse and the use of tomatoes doesn’t always work. There is another home remedy that is very useful for not only skunk smell, but any other stinky odor that winds up on your pooch. Just mix 4 cups of hydrogen peroxide with 1/3 cup of baking soda and a little glop of Dawn dish detergent. Give your pet a bath using the mixture instead of shampoo and let it sit on your pup for four or five supervised minutes.

There are times I wish I could have met what I now refer to as the stinky kitty (even though they are more like weasels than kitties), but hearing all the stinky stories make me change my mind. Not because of the smell, of course, but because if I get sprayed, I’ll have to have a bath. I hate baths!

My Afternoon at the Country Cut

3 Mar

This is Diesel.

He’s a very happy puppy.

You may remember him from my Gotcha Party. He and his sister Bella (who was extremely shy and stayed far away) have a mom who runs her own hair salon called the Country Cut. I spent the afternoon there because my nanny was getting her hair cut. I thought I knew all about hair cuts as I routinely get them, but this was something completely different. Lots of that stuff called tin foil (which I never get to play with) was involved, as well as this terrifying contraption: I swear it was growling at me, but mom said it was just blowing air to dry nanny’s hair. Yeah right, it was going to bite me. I tried to find a way to escape.

But I was stuck. Silly Diesel didn’t seem bothered by anything. He even took a snooze. Happy tail wags!

Pearly Whites

22 Feb

February is Pet Dental Health Month meaning I’ve been hearing an awful lot about us dogs and our teeth. I get my teeth brushed pretty much every other day (I guess the ideal is every day, but my mom can sometimes be forgetful) and while it’s not one of my favorite activities, I don’t really dread it as much as say a nail clipping.

When it comes time for a brushing, my mom first opens my mouth and lips and looks at my teeth and gums. She checks for anything odd, like lumps or sores, and also my gums for any sign of redness or swelling. After that is over, she readies my toothbrush with a little bit of doggy toothpaste.

Peanut butter is my favorite!

Now Prudence, you may be asking yourself, can’t I just use to toothpaste that I use on myself on my dog? While that might seem acceptable, I mean they both do the same job, human toothpaste is not meant to be ingested and since we haven’t quite mastered the whole spitting-in-a-sink thing, dog toothpaste is specifically made to be okay if ingested in small amounts. And there are a lot of different dog specific toothpastes available! My friend Leo has a minty vanilla toothpaste, I have the peanut butter, and I have even seen liver flavored (yum!).

Once the toothpaste is on the toothbrush (there are dog specific toothbrushes, but any soft bristled toothbrush will do. Or those finger brushes work) My teeth are then thoroughly brushed in a circular motion with time spent on the gum line and my back molars where a lot of gunk can accumulate.

It didn’t take me too long to get use to my teeth being brushed. Mom took her time letting me sniff the brush, chew it a bit, taste the toothpaste, and so on. Plus I got a ton of treats in the process so it was tail wags all around. What was a bit more difficult was letting my lip get pulled up and my mouth opened. There was just something I didn’t like about it. So, again there were lots of treats, kisses, and praise when I let mom touch my mouth without yanking my head away. Now I’m completely use to it!

Daily (or every other day) brushings are great, but they are only one step in the process of healthy teeth. I also get a lot of these chewies called Zuke’s Z-Ridge Dental Chews. I know I have mentioned them before, and do you blame me? They are so very good! All the flavors (there are three: carrot, cranberry, and original) have an alfalfa base that naturally scrubs the teeth as it’s chewed. Plus there is nutmeg, clove, fennel and parsley to help freshen stale dog breath.

I’m also soon up for a dental check-up with my doggy doctor, Dr. S. A vet cleaning is the only sure fire way to remove all of the tartar build up on my teeth. These are either done annually or semiannually so you should check with your vet to see which is appropriate for your pooch.

Spa Day

24 Jan

Today I had a spa day. Usually you humans talk about spa days with excitement and anticipation of relaxation and beauty. Bah! What dog needs to look beautiful? Apparently my mom thinks I do (and am), but I would, and will always, be just as happy being covered in stinky mud or sand (just ask Angelica!). But I put up with my mom’s pampering because it makes her happy, and some of it is actually beneficial to my health.

So, what does a doggy do during a spa day? Well, first I get put in the sink and bathed. Now, hopefully you all know by now how much I detest bathes. Today was no exception. I just stared mournfully out the window the entire time, wishing for a squirrel to run by so I would at least have an excuse to jump out of the sink and go tearing through the house.

After the suds, I was whisked into the bedroom, dried with a warm towel, and put in my Snuggie.

Don't I look miserable?

I thought I looked weird in the Snuggie thing, Gracie Lynn definitely agreed (she wouldn’t stop laughing), but mom said it would keep me warm and that I looked cute. She then cleaned my ears, clipped my nails (I fought with her about this for as long as possible. I really don’t like having my feet touched), and put this cream stuff on my paw pads. It’s made specially for pooches and help moisturize our paw pads, which can be really helpful in the winter when the air is dry. My pads were getting a bit cracked from the heat in the house too.

After a quick brushing I was all done, smelling like cucumbers and cleanliness. Not how I really want to smell, but it makes the humans happy.I guess the upside about all of this trauma was that I got to try the new snacks my mom bought me the other day at the Loyal Biscuit. They’re Zuke’s Mini Naturals, which I usually get, but this time mom bought me the chicken kind instead of peanut butter! They are delicious! I just wish Gracie would stop trying to eat them. They say “dog treats” not kitty treats. Can’t she read?Happy tail wags.

It’s a Wash

4 Jan

A couple of weeks ago, my mom got a free sample in the mail from a company called Happy Tails. She had requested one from them because I am running low on my usual doggy shampoo and she wanted to try something new (too bad for me. Baths are icky). So, we were sent a small bottle of Bubbles ‘n Beads.Bubbles ‘n Beads is a two-in-one shampoo, meaning there is shampoo and conditioner. It contains these little beads that help bring the conditioners to the skin. It contains tea tree oil (something my mom loves) to help clean and heal any infections, as well as 14 amino acids to help repair a dull coat and combat the itchies (something I definitely have).

I was not too excited to see this in the mail. I knew it would wind up with me in the sink, soaking wet, and covered in suds. But I sucked it up and let my mom give me a B-A-T-H. Bubbles ‘n Beads didn’t smell like my usual shampoo (that one smells of tropical things), it smelled clean and fresh, like a rain storm. Or like those things my mom likes to eat called cucumbers. It rinsed out very well. My mom was a bit afraid that the beads would get suck in my hair, but they either dissolved or got rinsed out. I also noticed that my hair is a little bit shinier, especially on the top of my head. Softer too. So, I say, all in all it’s a pretty good shampoo, for those of you that like that sort of thing. All I know is that it means mom is probably going to buy some and that means more bathes. Ick.

Happy, sudsy tail wags!
