Pru’s Wooftastic Gift Guide 2011: The Giving Tree

5 Dec

Christmas. While usually just thinking about this holiday and the onslaught of presents sends me into a flurry of tail wags and tapping paws. The humans say I’m selfish for only caring about what’s given to me, and while that is very, very true, I’ve decided that for this years gift guide, not only will I show you that you can spoil your dog (and maybe you) with all the presents his or her selfish heart desires, but also do some good in the process. Each company and products that I feature donate a portion or the entirety of their profits to a pet-based charity.

During this time of the year, humans start looking ahead to the future by purchasing calendars for the upcoming year. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations jump on the bandwagon and release calendars featuring shelter alumni or just shelter supporter’s pets.

The Humane Society of Knox County, a local shelter where my kitty brother Harry came from, has released their own calendar. You can purchase your own for $10 and be assured that all the money goes right back into the shelter to help the animals currently in their care.

Every dog needs a nice collar; something that’s bold and shows off their personality. Fifi Run may just fit the bill. Fifi Run makes edgy but incredibly chic collars with a little bit of an electric 80s feel. The What Would Lassie Do? Collar happens to be my personal favorite (what dog doesn’t emulate Lassie and her heroism?). And the best part? Fifi Run chooses a different dog charity each month to donate 10% of their proceeds to.

My love for Mutt Nose Best is very well known (and no, it’s not just because I’m the face of their new shampoo scent). Mutt Nose is a Maine based company that uses human grade ingredients (most locally sourced) to make some of the yummiest smelling dog shampoos, conditioners, eau de toilettes, nose balm, and ear and eye wipes. They’ve currently released a special edition holiday scent, U Puppermint Puppy that will make your pooch smell like a warm mug of peppermint hot chocolate. Each month, Mutt Nose choose one pet based charity to promote and raise funds for (you can read more about last month’s charity here).

Keeping your dog safe is a top priority for dog owners. Do it in style with another of my favorite products, a blanketID! BlanketID tags are made to help you find your dog in case they are lost not only from them wearing the tag, but also through online support, including emails to local blanketID members and local animal related businesses like hospitals, shelters, and SPCAs. Plus, if someone finds your dog, they only have to type in the code found on the back to find all of your dogs information like your phone number, address, your dog’s allergies, and more. Try fitting that on any other tag! Plus, every time a tag is registered and membership purchased, blanketID puts money into their Blanket Fund to help animals in need (you can see the animals they have helped here). Over 15% of blanketIDs profits go into their Blanket Fund.

Treats are always a doggy crowd pleaser when they are found under the Christmas tree. Some of my favorite treats (though honestly, I don’t really have any non-favorite treats) are Zuke’s Mini Naturals in peanut butter. They are soft little nibblets that are perfect for a training session or to stuff in a toy like a Busy Buddy or Kong Canine Genius. I would rather I just receive them by the handful, but mom usually makes me work for them. The human brains behind Zuke’s decided to start a fund called the Dog and Cat Cancer Fund (DCCFund) in honor of their dogs Oly and Zuke who passed away from cancer.Every year, Zuke’s donates a large percentage of their profits to the DCCFund. Last year alone they donated over $40,000. You can see some of the pets the fund has help here.

No hip pooch is complete without the gift of a leash from a certain fat, red suited jolly human. One of the neatest leash companies around is Found My Animal. All the leashes are hand made is New England by professional rope makers and some are even made from recycled bottles. The bright orange Rescue Leash is not only fabulously colorful, but it’s also made to promote pet adoption (orange is the official color for animal protection awareness). As Found My Animal’s mission is to raise awareness about animal adoption, they donate a fair amount of their profits to different pet-based charities. For example, last Saturday during an event for Rational Animal, for every purchase of a Rescue Leash, Found donated $5 to Rational Animal. You can see more of their charitable work and donations here.

And finally, as a little treat to you humans with a sweet tooth, is Rescue Chocolate. Rescue Chocolate is, as their website states “the sweetest way to save a life.” 100% of the net profits from each of the vegan, kosher, and USA made sweets sold goes to a different animal rescue organization each month. The organization being helped during December is the Animal Farm Foundation. If that doesn’t tempt you into buying, than maybe the funky flavors and inventive names will. What human can turn down a mint and dark chocolate candy bar called Foster-iffic Peppermint? Now remember, these are human-only treats. No dog consumption allowed!

I hope my gift ideas have inspired you to not only gift your friends and furry family members a little something special, but also to think charitably this holiday season.

Happy tail wags!

Fishing

8 Jun

It looks like this week may become a week of reviews as I have another fun product that I get to share with all my friends (I mean you guys, silly!). This time around, it’s a really pawesome chew toy sent to my by my friends Salina and Baby Patches of Nip and Bones. This cute fish, called the Rope Chew Fish Dog Toy is probably one of the neatest chewable toys I have. It is made out of cotton rope that is 100% azo-free (azo is a compound sometimes found in dyes that are potentially carcinogenic) and machine washable. Because the fish is made out of rope, it becomes almost like floss when chewed. In fact, the toy is made to fray after while to not only lead to more flossing action, but to also show that your pooch has been using it.

My mom was a little bit hesitant about me getting the toy (I sometimes have a habit of trying to eat string. I blame my cat-brother Harry; he does it too), but was reassured that the toy is so well made that the rope most likely will not come off the toy. The fish is actually quite heavy and thick, which lends itself to putting up with a lot of abuse from my teeth. Though the humans are less than impressed with I attempt to throw it across the room or at them.

I’ve had this fish ever since my birthday and have been chomping on it rather regularly and it looks almost exactly as it did out of the package. It frustrates me a little, as I quite enjoy eviscerating my toys, but my mom is incredibly impressed. I have a feeling this fish is going to be around a long time for me to chew on.

Thanks again to Nip and Bones for the lovely present! If you’d like to purchase the Rope Fish, make sure you check out the Nip and Bones shop.

Happy tail wags!

(FTC Disclosure:  I was sent the Rope Fish for free by Nip and Bones for the purpose of writing a review. No other compensation was given for this review)

Who Doesn’t Love Presents?

17 May

Presents are wonderful. They make me so happy, and every time I use or wear or eat or think about my presents, that happiness continues on. Last week my birthday left me so brimming with cheer, my butt is still wagging. One of the sweetest gifts I received came from my friend Claudia and her three sweet pups who are behind Schnauzer-tude. Claudia make a donation in my name to the Humane Society of Knox County, my favorite animal shelter. Though I do like having gifts, I know that some of the best are ones that help other animals.

I also received a lovely package from Nip and Bones. Inside contained a present from my mom, an interactive treat toy called the Busy Buddy Twist ‘n’ Treat toy, and a couple of surprises from Salina and the every fluffy Baby Patches. I will talk about one of the surprises in another post because I want to do a whole review about it, but I can say I got a sample of these really tasty treats from Pawduke and an antler dog chew! From my mom I was given a bag of freeze-dried venison snacks from Nature’s Variety, a bag of treats from Zukes, and a yummy bone to chew on; all purchased from the Loyal Biscuit. The Busy Buddy has been a really fun toy to play with. You just unscrew the pieces, fill it with treats, screw the pieces back together and let your dog figure out how to get the treats out. It’s been fun to roll it around the living room with my nose. And the Pawduke treats work with the Busy Buddy perfectly! I was actually confused when I was first given one of the Pawduke treats because they are almost perfectly sphere. I thought it was a mini ball! My mom had to break one into pieces for me to realize I could eat it.

Of course, no birthday is complete without a special outfit made just for me by Angelica and Leo. My favorite part about this shirt is that it is made from one of my aunt’s old tank-tops, so it still smells like her. What you can’t see from the photo though (I was being a difficult model) is that the back has frilly little ruffles along the butt and a pocket! Each are lined with lace like the tall collar. It’s a very unique shirt, I have none like it in my wardrobe. I’m so happy to have it!

I’m also so very happy to have so many loving family members and friends who help make not only each birthday, but every day a wonderful event. My life would probably be very dull without you all, so thank you from the top, bottom, and middle of my sweet puppy heart.

Barking Deals

26 Jan

Everyone likes to save right? I know I like it when my humans save because that usually means I get more stuff either through them having more money to spend on me or by them buying more goodies for me because they scored good deals. Sometimes it can be a hassle trying to hunt down the best deals. So what’s better than having a website that has daily offers of up to 50-90% off popular pet items? Nothing I say! That website just happens to be Barking Deals. One of the great features of Barking Deals is that they offer a opt-in email subscription program where those that sign up receive daily emails that announce the newest deal. Though my mom hasn’t bought anything yet (even though I tried really hard to convince her to buy me the dehydrated liver bits that were yesterday’s deal (who can beat $9.99 on a product originally costing $19.98? And a free Kong Wubba!) apparently already having a bag of dehydrated liver means I can’t get any more. Grr.) she checks reads the email alerts everyday ready to score a great deal!

In the Presence of Presents

29 Dec

First I would like to thank everyone who commented on my blog to wish me a Merry Christmas. The humans and I are just coming around from the post-holiday stupor and over-eating (though I still attest that I did not eat that piece of bacon my gramp just happened to drop on the floor when I was walking by; it just disappeared!) so I haven’t been being a very attentive blog-dog. But here I am and ready to share the wonderful spoils the humans and Santa Paws left for me under the Christmas tree.

My very first Christmas gift came from my lovely not-related aunt Angelica. She has always been worried that I would catch a chill from how cold my humans keep our apartment. So, to make sure I stay toasty warm, especially when I have to make the tail-freezing pee runs during the very cold Maine winters, Angelica made me a hooded snow suit! It’s fleecy, warm, and features owls, one of my mom’s favorite creatures (after me and the kitties of course). Thank goodness I got the snow suit too as it came in quite handy during the snow storm we experienced over the weekend. It has made going outside in the cold much more bearable.

The second set of gifts came from Santa Paws (who I think shops at The Loyal Biscuit) and my mom. Santa Paws must have been paying attention when I made my Wooftastic Gift Guide as he bought me the Chilly Dog Monkey Sweater I’ve had my pretty little puppy eyes on. It’s thick, warm, and oh so adorable! The Santa Paws squeaky was given to me by my mom who made it for me. She also gave one to my buddy Leo. It’s quite fun to chew on, though I wish he had parts I could chew off. I guess my mom made sure that wouldn’t happen when she made him.

I also got a couple of bags of treats from my aunty, Gram and Gramp, as well as a really yummy can of Merrick’s Venison Holiday Stew to have as a special holiday dinner. My nanny said something about paying for me to have a bath at the Biscuit which would be my gift. I kind of hope she’s kidding, but since it made my mom happy, I may just have to accept it with a tail-wag.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season as well! I’m slightly sad that it is over, but really I’ve been too busy playing with, wearing and eating my presents to really think about it.

Happy tail wags!

Pru’s Wooftastic Gift Guide: Toys

16 Dec

For me, Christmas is never complete until I get a new toy to play with. Even though I already have a full toy box full of squeakies, stuffies, and a stray cow tail or two, I really can never have enough toys. Here’s my list of great toys that Santa Paws better be carrying in his sack of goodies.

Obviously I can’t make a list about dog toys without mentioning my mom’s pawesome reindeer squeakies from The Smiling Frog Pets. Made from polar fleece, felt, and stuffed with poly fil, this reindeer is one of my favorite toys that my mom makes. The public seems to agree as it is her personal best seller.

Next on the list is Planet Dog’s Orbee-Tuff Snowball.

This bouncy ball is a great toy for those pups that really like to take their aggression by chewing up helpless toys. It’s even ranked a 5 out of 5 Chompers on Planet Dog’s “Chew-o-meter.” What’s even neater, for humans at least, is that the Snowball has a minty flavor and smell which may help to combat any smelly dog breath. I would prefer chicken flavor, but I guess that’s just me.

I was introduced to this next toy on my friend Cate’ blog, Under the Blanket.

These 100% wool felt Peppermint toys are made by a company with one of the cutest names around, Lollycadoodle. All of Lollycadoodle’s toys are hand made by artisans in Nepal using hand-dyed New Zealand wool. The best part is that these toys are completely biodegradable.

Some toys aren’t just for chewing on or tossing around. In fact, there are some really great toys out there that can provide a dog with mental stimulation usually in the form of puzzles. One of my favorite of these puzzle toys (which I’m quite eager to get my paws on someday) is the Nina Ottosson Dog Tornado.

The idea behind the Dog Tornado is that you hide yummy treats inside the little bone shaped impressions and then rotate the top to hide the treat. Your dog will then have to work out how to move the toy around to get the treat. It’s a great way to exercise a dog’s mental capabilities, something as important as daily physical activity.

If there are any great toys that I should have included, please leave a comment.

Squeaky Bats and Catnip Skulls

21 Oct

My very favorite thing about any holiday is that I usually always get presents. While Howl-o-ween is still more than a week away, the kitties and I have already been given our very spooktacular presents purchased from the online shop Nip and Bones. The kitties were each given a Skeleton Feather Ball which came two in a pack. We were unsure if the balls had catnip in them or not, but the kitties loved them all the same. Gracie Lynn really enjoyed licking the feathers, while Harry just liked chewing his and kicking it with his feet. The balls themselves are very durable (trust me, after the kitties had their fun I put the balls through the ringer by throwing them around and chewing on them until they were covered in my drool, much to the kitties’ displeasure.) but the feathers were very easy to remove and then scatter around the house. Nanny really liked cleaning up that mess! I was given the Eco-Friendly Berber Bat squeaky toy made by West Paw. It is quite like the very first Howl-o-ween toy I ever got, a stuffed pumpkin, which was made by the same company. The bat is made with thick berber fabric, recycled fiberfill, and features not one but two squeakers, one in each wing!Though the bat is on the larger side, I am still able to pick it up and swing it around. It’s fun to try to make it fly, especially at my mom’s head. I have yet to tear the orange eyes off, one of my specialties, so they’re either very secure, or I’m saving them for a day when I’m really bored.

If you’re interested in purchasing either item for your fur babies, check them out at Nip and Bones. They have a great selection of Howl-o-ween things including some devilishly cute costumes! Make sure you take a look around.

Apples and Pumpkins

11 Oct

With the chill of fall comes the need for warm, cozy sweaters and hoodies to warm not only humans, but their four-legged friends who could catch cold as well. Recently, my mom has been a busy little worker bee at her sewing machine and the fruits of her labor have proved quite cute and comfy. This hoodie, called The Apple a Day Hoodie is a one of a kind (also known as “OOAK”) piece that is available in a size small. The majority of the materials are taken from old clothing, while some (like the polka-dotted and green materials) are new. While too small for me, this hoodie would fit a pup roughly 12 to 13 inches long and 16 or so inches around the chest. The Great Pumpkin Hoodie, modeled by yours truly, is a wonderfully warm hoodie made from a flannel sheet. The pumpkin and inside lining of the hood are made out of new, bright orange cotton and the stem of the pumpkin is made using scraps of left over material. It can be purchased in a medium or a large as the temperature gets frostier. ‘

If you’re interested in making a purchase, please visit my mom and my not-related-aunt Angelica’s shop, The Smiling Frog Pets. And if there are any kitties in your life, you may be interested in purchasing the most Howl-o-weeniest catnip bats made by Angelica! Be sure to check the shop regularly for new items, especially in time for the all the holidays that are fast approaching.

When Old Becomes New

4 Oct

I have a lot of toys. In fact, I actually have a whole basket full (well really it’s overflowing). The funny thing is, not all of my toys are “dog” toys; a majority of them are stuffies that, for some reason, are marketed for humans. I find this very strange because I don’t see any humans (except maybe the little ones) playing with their stuffies. More often than not, the stuffies sit on shelves and gather icky dust which really ruins their flavor and chewability. My mom actually has a basket filled with bears. One day, while in my room and slightly bored, I decided to put the bears to good use (I was really aching for a good chew on something). Well, this made my mom very upset as the bears were actually her late grandmother’s and from different parts of the country. Excuse me for thinking that something special shouldn’t spend it’s life in a basket not being played with.

Anyway, there is a toy (one of my all time favorites) that was once a “human” only thing that my mom had.I guess it’s what the humans call a “neck pillow” but now it’s my “throw-it-around-shake-it-toss-it-and-pretend-to-kill-it pillow” and it is pawesome! When I was a puppy, I had a squeaky toy that was similar, but after a rather enthusiastic round of tug-o-war, it wound up irreversibly damaged. This pillow, however, is like a big dog version and much harder to tear to pieces (both a good and bad thing).

I also have a frog that was once one of my aunt’s Valentine’s Day present and a monkey (Boo Boo!) that were once human toys. I don’t know why I am fond of those type of stuffies, but really I am. My nanny says it’s like when a human buys a little human a new, expensive toy but all they want to play with are the pots and pans. I say it’s because it’s fun to take things from the humans!

Are there any toys that your dog or cat uses (or if you are one of my dog or cat readers, that you use) for a toy?
