Winners!

13 Jul

Thank you to everyone who visited and helped celebrate my blogiversary! I wish I could give you all prizes as I love you all so much. Maybe one day I will become a rich and famous pooch and I will be able to give everyone all my favorite things like at loud human Oprah who lives in the television.

Anyway, on to the winners! First up is for the bag of Wishes from The Honest Kitchen. Since everyone was okay with winning the Wishes, I number each comment starting with the first one and used Random.org to pick the first winner. Congratulations to Denise Dochnahl and Bella the Basset Hound!

Next up is the penguin from my mom’s shop The Smiling Frog Pets. Using the same method (minus the few commenters who opted not to win the penguin and Denise of course. I know I’m greedy, but I have to make it fair) here are the results: Congratulations to my3seadogs and her pups Charlie, Badger, Seamus and Dinah Moe the Bearded Collies! I hope you four know how to share.

Thanks again to all who participated. This was so much tail-wagging fun I may just have to have another giveaway soon.

Happy tail wags!

Blogiversary!

7 Jul

Update: Thanks for all who entered! The contest is now closed.

Exactly one year ago my mom and I sat at her laptop and wrote my very first blog post. I wasn’t too sure as to what direction I wanted my blog to go in, all I knew was that I wanted to enlighten the world on all things dog (and sometimes cat) through a dog’s point-of-view.

A lot can happen in a year! I’ve made great friends both furry and human, I’ve gone through changes in diet, started a facebook page, became a model for my mom and Angelica’s Etsy shop, The Smiling Frog Pets, started tweeting, and became a Web Hound for The Honest Kitchen. To celebrate my first year as official blog dog I’ve decided to hold a giveaway for my wonderful friends. Up for grabs are two of my favorite items, the first being a bag of Wishes from The Honest Kitchen.  Wishes are dehydrated Icelandic haddock filets that can be eaten by both cats and dogs. Broken up, these filets become perfect training treats. They have become my favorite treats. My tail wiggles extra hard when my mom opens a package.

The next item is a squeaky penguin from The Smiling Frog Pets. This penguin is made from fleece, has sewn on felt features and is made with love from my mom!

Each item will be given away separately. If you would like to enter all you have to do is leave a comment on this post (and though it won’t give you any extra entries, I would really like to hear if you have a favorite post of mine)! If you would like to be excluded from either of the prizes please say so in your comment. For an extra entry, become a fan of my facebook page and leave an additional comment saying you’ve “liked” me. I will be randomly picking two winners on Monday the 12th Tuesday the 13th!

Good luck and happy tail wags!

Love. Adopt.

23 Jun

Today I’m going to give the blog spotlight to my buddy Leo. He and his mom, Angelica, are the other half of The Smiling Frog Pets, the Etsy business where my mom sells her dog clothes and pet toys. Most recently the shop has featured a new denim squeaky ball with a very important message on it: Love. Adopt. I’ll let Leo explain why this message is so important to him and his mom. First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Leonardo Miguel Ross, otherwise known as Leo or Leelee and I would like to tell you my story. I am originally from Louisiana and my mom found me on Petfinder. I was rescued by Chi.P.P. (Chihuahua & Pound Puppy) Rescue of Louisiana. My foster mom scooped me up just as I was brought in to a kill shelter.

My foster mom, Rocky is a hero in my eyes. She takes in tons of dogs; they usually have 50 at a time! I had many medical issues, still do, but they took care of me. My mom was shocked at how much the rescue owed in medical bills. Luckily they have a very caring vet.

I was brought to Maine along with around 20 other dogs in a van. The Golden Retriever Rescue Lifeline helps to bring the pups from Chi.P.P. to Maine. I got brought along even though I’m not a Golden. It was a long trip but I was so happy to see my new mom I peed all over her. She didn’t care; she started crying she was so happy to see me. When our eyes met we knew we had met before. So my life began as a Mainer and the most spoiled and loved little dog in the world.

My mom made the Love Adopt squeaky ball toys to help me raise money for the Chi.P.P. rescue. They are upcycyled from old denim jeans and have a fun squeaker. 100% of the profit goes to Chi.P.P. Help me to help them rescue more sweet pups like me. Please rescue; you’ll be glad you did! Happy tail wags!

All For Me!

13 May

I’m greedy and I am completely okay with admitting it. That’s why holidays (and yes, I consider my birthday a very important holiday) are my favorite days because usually they involve presents of some sort. Yesterday was no exception!

My birthday started with lots and lots of happy birthday wishes on Twitter, my facebook, and here on the blog! I was so happy, my butt almost broke from wiggling so much. I had some brunch (mom had an early morning meeting so I missed breakfast) consisting mostly of these really amazing liver cookies made by my not-related Aunt Angelica. They are so very delicious. Maybe I can convince her to give me the recipe to share!

Anyway, I put on my birthday dress (the one in yesterday’s photo and made for me by my mom) and headed to The Loyal Biscuit to pick out my birthday present. I was told I could pick out any toy I wanted. I really wanted some treats, especially these yummy pizza treats packaged all pretty like, but mom told me I already had too many. I thought that was kind of rude, seeing as it was my birthday and all. I figure that means I’ll just have to scarf down the treats I have now so I can get some new ones, so I guess it’s not too bad.

I finally decided on this really fun toy from Knight Pet called a Bot-A-Mal. You see, I am a water bottle chewer from way back in my puppy days. But the thing is, water bottles can be dangerous because they crack and splinter. Plus there’s the whole thing about plastic not being so good to chew. Bot-A-Mals are stuffed animals that you can put a water bottle in so it has all the crunchy fun without the danger! Fenway, the Biscuit store dog, suggested I get one because she has one too.

My Bot-A-Mal is the best!

When leaving The Loyal Biscuit, mom and I literally ran into Angelica and Leo who were on their weekly shopping outing. It was a great birthday surprise, even though I made Leo very anxious because I was so hyper. Aunt Angelica bought me a big cow trachea AND had an adorable hoodie for me! It has ruffles! I love ruffles! They are so girly and cute. Everyone has been calling them my butt ruffles. And the hood lining features these really cute Scottie dogs. I’ve never met a Scottie dog before, but if they are as cute as the ones in my hoodie, I really want to meet one!

For dinner, my mom made me a yummy steak with some garlic. It wasn’t my first taste of steak, but it definitely was the first time anyone ever made a steak just for me! I sat in the kitchen drooling while my mom prepared it for me. I was a little nervous  because it was my mom’s first time making a steak (she doesn’t cook much) but it was all for nothing because it was delicious. Steak, roasted carrots and sweet potato make for a very delicious birthday dinner.

Squeaky and Stripes!

13 Apr

There have been some new additions to The Smiling Frog Pets shop and while I have posted them on my facebook page (are you a fan yet?) I haven’t talked about them on my blog.

The Preppy Pup

This is the Preppy Pup Sweater. It is made from an older sweater of my mom’s that she no longer wears. Instead of donating it (she likes to donate the clothes that would not make good dog clothes to either Goodwill or the Salvation Army.) she refashioned them into a sweater for me! There is enough material left to make either a small or medium, so if you’re interested in buying one for your pup, check it out here.

Squeaky Star

We have a new toy called the Denim Star Squeaky Toy. They are made out of old jeans, so they are what you humans call “eco-friendly.” As you can see, the specific star in the picture has a “P” (for Prudence, naturally), but you can have any letter you want! So if your pup’s name is Fido, ask for an “F”, Zeus, ask for a “Z”. I think you get the idea. The star’s seams are also double stitched for extra durability.

I usually only post the stuff that my mom makes, but Angelica makes some extremely cute stuff too. One of my favorites of hers is this upcycled hoodie featuring the Care Bears (and modeled by Leo). It has a cute kangaroo pocket and has this really neat faded look for that extra vintage feel. It only comes in a large, so if you have a pup that is around 15 inches long with around a 20 inch chest, definitely scoop up this hoodie!

Full of Stuffing

6 Apr

A lesson to learn: toys, especially of the stuffy, plush kind, are never indestructible.

Case in point

Another lesson to learn: Each dog has a different style when it comes to obliterating their plushy prey.

(photo via my friend Leo’s facebook)

Some dogs love to shred, other dogs love to pull, or the rare pup (like me!) loves to squeak and squeak and chew until a small hole appears at the seam. Then it’s no holds bar stuffing time! Lucky for my mom, I realized early on that the stuffing does not taste to good so I don’t eat it. I just decorate the rug with it.

A few things to think about if your pup in a plushy killer.

1. Learn some simple sewing techniques. If the rip or tear is in an easy place to repair, like the seam, you can just sew it back up.

2. If you pup is after the stuffing or if they eat the stuffing once the toy pops a hole, think about investing in some stuffing free toys like a stuffing free snake by Dr. Noys.

3. Maybe plushy toys are just not the right choice. Think squeaky balls, a Canine Genius, rope toys; things that are a little harder to rip to shreds.

The dog toys and clothing my mom sells on Etsy can now be found in the brand new shop called The Smiling Frog Pets. Already she has sold two hoodies. And you know what that means, more money for her to spend on me!

Also, there is a new item in the shop. It’s a squeaky bunny made out of a durable fleece. And it’s purple, which is definitely a selling point to me. I love all things purple and green. Well, pink too. This bunny would be a great Easter present for your pooch. For more information, just click on the photo.

Roll On

27 Feb

One afternoon when I was still quite a pup, Mom and I visited a dog store in Camden called Critter Outfitter. As we reached the counter to pay for the chewies my mom picked up, the man behind the counter handed my mom a green ball and asked if we wanted it. Apparently, a rogue pooch had chewed off the tag. Of course my mom said yes because who turns down something free (she also knew how much I loved balls). It must have been what you humans call fate because since that day, that ball has become one of my all time favorite toys.

What so special about this tennis ball? Well, it’s made by the company Kong and it has a special trick. When it is squeezed, it squeaks! So it’s not only just a ball, it a squeaky toy; my two favorite play things combined! It’s my favorite toy to play fetch with (and we’ve been playing a lot of indoor fetch recently because of the icky weather) and when I retrieve the ball I do laps around the house squeaking it. So, thank you, man from Critter Outfitter. You definitely chose the right pooch to give the ball to.

Happy tail wags.

Gifts

15 Feb

I think I need to change my motto from “the more attention the better” to “gimme PRESENTS!” But I’ve been told doing that would make me seem like a spoiled brat. Of course, we all know I really am a spoiled brat, but I guess there’s no need to be parading it around.

As it was Valentine’s Day, I received a couple of Valentines from my friends and family. Okay, really it was just Leo and my mom. I was actually really surprised Leo gave me a Valentine as we haven’t been getting along recently (he doesn’t like it when I jump all over him or have to share his shopping cart at T.J. Maxx).

My Valentine from Leo!

Mom took me to the Loyal Biscuit the day before yesterday and let me pick out a toy.

Meet my new monkey!

My new squeaky monkey is just my size, I love him. And he has a really loud squeak, the better to annoy aunty with.

I also got a can of Canidae dog food to go with my usual dinner. I’ve never had food from a can, and before you go squishing up your nose is disgust, it was actually quite tasty. And not too stinky, according to my mom.

I hope you all had a woofing good Valentine’s day.
