Pru’s Wooftastic Gift Guide 2011: The Giving Tree

5 Dec

Christmas. While usually just thinking about this holiday and the onslaught of presents sends me into a flurry of tail wags and tapping paws. The humans say I’m selfish for only caring about what’s given to me, and while that is very, very true, I’ve decided that for this years gift guide, not only will I show you that you can spoil your dog (and maybe you) with all the presents his or her selfish heart desires, but also do some good in the process. Each company and products that I feature donate a portion or the entirety of their profits to a pet-based charity.

During this time of the year, humans start looking ahead to the future by purchasing calendars for the upcoming year. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations jump on the bandwagon and release calendars featuring shelter alumni or just shelter supporter’s pets.

The Humane Society of Knox County, a local shelter where my kitty brother Harry came from, has released their own calendar. You can purchase your own for $10 and be assured that all the money goes right back into the shelter to help the animals currently in their care.

Every dog needs a nice collar; something that’s bold and shows off their personality. Fifi Run may just fit the bill. Fifi Run makes edgy but incredibly chic collars with a little bit of an electric 80s feel. The What Would Lassie Do? Collar happens to be my personal favorite (what dog doesn’t emulate Lassie and her heroism?). And the best part? Fifi Run chooses a different dog charity each month to donate 10% of their proceeds to.

My love for Mutt Nose Best is very well known (and no, it’s not just because I’m the face of their new shampoo scent). Mutt Nose is a Maine based company that uses human grade ingredients (most locally sourced) to make some of the yummiest smelling dog shampoos, conditioners, eau de toilettes, nose balm, and ear and eye wipes. They’ve currently released a special edition holiday scent, U Puppermint Puppy that will make your pooch smell like a warm mug of peppermint hot chocolate. Each month, Mutt Nose choose one pet based charity to promote and raise funds for (you can read more about last month’s charity here).

Keeping your dog safe is a top priority for dog owners. Do it in style with another of my favorite products, a blanketID! BlanketID tags are made to help you find your dog in case they are lost not only from them wearing the tag, but also through online support, including emails to local blanketID members and local animal related businesses like hospitals, shelters, and SPCAs. Plus, if someone finds your dog, they only have to type in the code found on the back to find all of your dogs information like your phone number, address, your dog’s allergies, and more. Try fitting that on any other tag! Plus, every time a tag is registered and membership purchased, blanketID puts money into their Blanket Fund to help animals in need (you can see the animals they have helped here). Over 15% of blanketIDs profits go into their Blanket Fund.

Treats are always a doggy crowd pleaser when they are found under the Christmas tree. Some of my favorite treats (though honestly, I don’t really have any non-favorite treats) are Zuke’s Mini Naturals in peanut butter. They are soft little nibblets that are perfect for a training session or to stuff in a toy like a Busy Buddy or Kong Canine Genius. I would rather I just receive them by the handful, but mom usually makes me work for them. The human brains behind Zuke’s decided to start a fund called the Dog and Cat Cancer Fund (DCCFund) in honor of their dogs Oly and Zuke who passed away from cancer.Every year, Zuke’s donates a large percentage of their profits to the DCCFund. Last year alone they donated over $40,000. You can see some of the pets the fund has help here.

No hip pooch is complete without the gift of a leash from a certain fat, red suited jolly human. One of the neatest leash companies around is Found My Animal. All the leashes are hand made is New England by professional rope makers and some are even made from recycled bottles. The bright orange Rescue Leash is not only fabulously colorful, but it’s also made to promote pet adoption (orange is the official color for animal protection awareness). As Found My Animal’s mission is to raise awareness about animal adoption, they donate a fair amount of their profits to different pet-based charities. For example, last Saturday during an event for Rational Animal, for every purchase of a Rescue Leash, Found donated $5 to Rational Animal. You can see more of their charitable work and donations here.

And finally, as a little treat to you humans with a sweet tooth, is Rescue Chocolate. Rescue Chocolate is, as their website states “the sweetest way to save a life.” 100% of the net profits from each of the vegan, kosher, and USA made sweets sold goes to a different animal rescue organization each month. The organization being helped during December is the Animal Farm Foundation. If that doesn’t tempt you into buying, than maybe the funky flavors and inventive names will. What human can turn down a mint and dark chocolate candy bar called Foster-iffic Peppermint? Now remember, these are human-only treats. No dog consumption allowed!

I hope my gift ideas have inspired you to not only gift your friends and furry family members a little something special, but also to think charitably this holiday season.

Out of the Savanna

12 Oct

You see that adorable pooch up there? Yes, that’s me! Aren’t I just scrumptious? And isn’t my collar absolutely chic? It was a gift from Uncommon Paws, and the topic of today’s post.

I was first introduced to Uncommon Paws at Woofstock where there was a mini Uncommon Paws store all set-up. Though Uncommon Paws carries a large range of some of the very best in pet supplies (like my favorite tags, blanketIDs!), they also have a line of collars, leashes, and harnesses all made by the Uncommon Paws crew in Maine. It was the collars that really drew mine as well as my mom’s eye, especially their faux-fur collars. And as if the collar fairy was listening to my thoughts (there is a collar fairy right? Who else makes sure my collars are always clean and pretty?), after speaking so highly of the collars on facebook, Uncommon Paws let me pick one of their collars for free!

I decided on the Giraffe Print Faux-Fur collar as the faux-fur was just so soft and the print so unlike any other collar I have (and trust me, I have a lot of collars!). I definitely made the right choice! The print is just loud enough to pop against my fur without looking too cheap or gaudy (dog forbid) and the material is just so soft my mom pets me extra just so she can pet my collar. The collar is backed with black webbing for sturdiness and features solid nickel hardware. I quite like the heavier (though not too heavy) hardware as it give the collar some weight and there for a substantial feel. Plus I just look so darn chic in it, don’t you think?

If you’d like to purchase an Uncommon Paws collar, or one of their other items, please visit their online store.

Happy tail wags!

(FTC Disclosure: I was sent the Giraffe Print Faux-Fur collar from Uncommon Paws free of purchase.)

Jaxs’ Allergies

11 Jul

I often extoll the virtues of a doggy wardrobe. Not only are dog clothes incredibly stylish, but they often can protect against sun, rain, cold, and yes, even allergies!

Meet Jaxs, a eight year-old Jack Russell Terrier who suffers from a painful allergy to grass (among other things including milk protein, and oats) If Jax comes in contact with even a single blade of the green stuff, sores start to form on his paws and his fur falls out in clumps. His very concerned human didn’t know what to do with Jaxs’ condition or any idea what has causing it. It wasn’t until Jaxs’ veterinarian ran a few tests confirming that he was, in fact, allergic to grass.

Armed with this information, and a set of canvas and velcro booties, Jaxs began his new life of romping through lawns without the painful side effects that would make him chew his paws. In fact, Jaxs has become so enamored with his booties that he will protect them from other dogs (especially when they try to pull them off) and he even cuddles with them when he sleeps. When his human grabs his leash in preparation for a walk, Jax will even go fetch his boots.

Obviously there are some less than understanding humans who believe the Jaxs’ human is cruel by making him wear his boots. The way I see it, though, it would be cruel if Jax had to be kept confined to his home due to a reaction with a very simple cure. Plus, I’m sure Jax doesn’t mind having a posh set of paw covers just as long as he gets to run in the fresh air without pain.

Who Doesn’t Love Presents?

17 May

Presents are wonderful. They make me so happy, and every time I use or wear or eat or think about my presents, that happiness continues on. Last week my birthday left me so brimming with cheer, my butt is still wagging. One of the sweetest gifts I received came from my friend Claudia and her three sweet pups who are behind Schnauzer-tude. Claudia make a donation in my name to the Humane Society of Knox County, my favorite animal shelter. Though I do like having gifts, I know that some of the best are ones that help other animals.

I also received a lovely package from Nip and Bones. Inside contained a present from my mom, an interactive treat toy called the Busy Buddy Twist ‘n’ Treat toy, and a couple of surprises from Salina and the every fluffy Baby Patches. I will talk about one of the surprises in another post because I want to do a whole review about it, but I can say I got a sample of these really tasty treats from Pawduke and an antler dog chew! From my mom I was given a bag of freeze-dried venison snacks from Nature’s Variety, a bag of treats from Zukes, and a yummy bone to chew on; all purchased from the Loyal Biscuit. The Busy Buddy has been a really fun toy to play with. You just unscrew the pieces, fill it with treats, screw the pieces back together and let your dog figure out how to get the treats out. It’s been fun to roll it around the living room with my nose. And the Pawduke treats work with the Busy Buddy perfectly! I was actually confused when I was first given one of the Pawduke treats because they are almost perfectly sphere. I thought it was a mini ball! My mom had to break one into pieces for me to realize I could eat it.

Of course, no birthday is complete without a special outfit made just for me by Angelica and Leo. My favorite part about this shirt is that it is made from one of my aunt’s old tank-tops, so it still smells like her. What you can’t see from the photo though (I was being a difficult model) is that the back has frilly little ruffles along the butt and a pocket! Each are lined with lace like the tall collar. It’s a very unique shirt, I have none like it in my wardrobe. I’m so happy to have it!

I’m also so very happy to have so many loving family members and friends who help make not only each birthday, but every day a wonderful event. My life would probably be very dull without you all, so thank you from the top, bottom, and middle of my sweet puppy heart.

Girls in White Dresses

30 Mar

A month or so ago, my mom purchased a dress for me from Eco-Pup, one of my favorite places to get clothes. I was under the distinct impression that upon arrival, I would be able to wear my Jet Set dress almost immediately. Of course the weather decided that it would not warm up enough for me to trot around in fancy frills, so I had to wait.

Thankfully the waiting (for now) is finally over! The other day my mom let me wear my dress to the delight of all the humans. And, of course, we had a photo shoot. The Jet Set dress is made from 100% organic, pink and white polka-dotted cotton, and features a cute green, pink, and white plaid rosette. Who says plaid and polka-dots don’t go together? Definitely not me! Even though it’s officially spring, it’s still a tad too cold for me to wear the dress all the time, but I have most certainly taken every opportunity to wear it. It makes my cuteness even more cute, if that’s even possible!

The Tale of the Cone

18 Jan

While I’m not the most flexible of dogs, I am able to put up with a lot. I mean, look at how many crazy outfits I let the humans dress me up in! There have only been a few times I’ve had to put my paw down, one of those times being when I had an unfortunate run in with “The Cone of Shame” (or, as it is most commonly known to you humans, the e-collar). It all happened after that big trip to the vets that most young dogs go through (I’ve heard the humans refer to it as a spay or neuter. It’s all gibberish to me). My mom was afraid I would chew the cut running down my belly, so she slipped this hard, plastic cone thing on my head. Terrified isn’t quite the best descriptor to explain how I felt. Not only did I have a hard time moving my head around, I also couldn’t get comfortable when trying to lay down. I wound up standing in the corner of the couch, the mouth of the e-collar resting on the arm. Thankfully, my mom took pity on me and removed the horrid abomination resting around my head.

Due to this wonderfully scarring event, I was a little more than skeptical when I received an offer to try out an interesting, flexible take on the hard plastic e-collar from Trimline Manufacturing. Of course my mom jumped on the chance (in her words “would you rather go back to the ‘cone of shame’ if something were to happen?” Anything but the cone of shame!). Trimline Veterinary Recovery Collars, also known as the “soft blue collar,” are just that, soft. They are made from laminated fabric that is non-toxic, non-allergenic, and water resistant which allows the wearer the ability to sleep, eat, and drink comfortably. This coated fabric also helps to keep the collar safe from wear and tear from any chewing and scratching (something that came in handy after the kitty Gracie Lynn decided to try to use it as a scratching pad).

And now for the embarrassing photo evidence:

Stop laughing!

While I didn’t run and hide during the reveal of the Trimline collar, it did take a little more than the average amount of coaxing and treats to get me comfortable enough to slip it over my head. As the collar is held in place with a draw string, it wasn’t as tight or uncomfortable as the traditional e-collar. In fact, after a few minutes of adjusting to having a bright blue thing in my peripheral, I was walking around the house as if I wasn’t wearing a funny form of neck wear (except that the humans were a lot more giggly whenever I walked by them).

The things I do for you people!

While I don’t need the Trimline collar anytime soon, thank goodness, it is something that is good to have on hand for those emergency situations. It’s flexible design means its incredibly easy to store away so my nanny won’t toss it due to it being “in the way” as was the fate of my last e-collar.

To order a Trimline Veterinary Recovery Collar, check out their website or you can contact your local pet supply store to see if they carry the “soft blue collar.”

Happy tail wags!

(FTC Disclosure: I was sent two Trimline Veterinary Recovery Collars to review. No other compensation was given for this review. All opinions expressed are solely from my little puppy brain!)

In the Presence of Presents

29 Dec

First I would like to thank everyone who commented on my blog to wish me a Merry Christmas. The humans and I are just coming around from the post-holiday stupor and over-eating (though I still attest that I did not eat that piece of bacon my gramp just happened to drop on the floor when I was walking by; it just disappeared!) so I haven’t been being a very attentive blog-dog. But here I am and ready to share the wonderful spoils the humans and Santa Paws left for me under the Christmas tree.

My very first Christmas gift came from my lovely not-related aunt Angelica. She has always been worried that I would catch a chill from how cold my humans keep our apartment. So, to make sure I stay toasty warm, especially when I have to make the tail-freezing pee runs during the very cold Maine winters, Angelica made me a hooded snow suit! It’s fleecy, warm, and features owls, one of my mom’s favorite creatures (after me and the kitties of course). Thank goodness I got the snow suit too as it came in quite handy during the snow storm we experienced over the weekend. It has made going outside in the cold much more bearable.

The second set of gifts came from Santa Paws (who I think shops at The Loyal Biscuit) and my mom. Santa Paws must have been paying attention when I made my Wooftastic Gift Guide as he bought me the Chilly Dog Monkey Sweater I’ve had my pretty little puppy eyes on. It’s thick, warm, and oh so adorable! The Santa Paws squeaky was given to me by my mom who made it for me. She also gave one to my buddy Leo. It’s quite fun to chew on, though I wish he had parts I could chew off. I guess my mom made sure that wouldn’t happen when she made him.

I also got a couple of bags of treats from my aunty, Gram and Gramp, as well as a really yummy can of Merrick’s Venison Holiday Stew to have as a special holiday dinner. My nanny said something about paying for me to have a bath at the Biscuit which would be my gift. I kind of hope she’s kidding, but since it made my mom happy, I may just have to accept it with a tail-wag.

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season as well! I’m slightly sad that it is over, but really I’ve been too busy playing with, wearing and eating my presents to really think about it.

Happy tail wags!

Pru’s Wooftastic Gift Guide: Collars, Leashes, and Tags, oh my!

17 Dec

This is the final part of my gift guide list and it’s all about collars, leashes, and cute tags. Oddly enough, these lists really have turned into showing the world what I want for Christmas. I hope Santa Paws is paying attention.

One of my absolute favorite places to shop for collars is The Mod Dog on Etsy. They make the cutest season collars like this one called Baby it’s Cold Outside.

One of my all time favorite collars, The Sugar Snap Pea collar I’m often seen wearing, comes from the Mod Dog! Each collar is handmade and can be customized to fit specific specifications including the type of hardware, color webbing, or if the collar is to be a martingale, buckle-release, or chain martingale.

Another collar that I’ve been kind of drooling over is Up Country’s Snowman Dog Collar. Each Up Country product, including their matching leashes, are hand-sewn in the United States. They also donate products regularly to area shelters as well as sponsor a veterinary clinic in their town.

Of course no collar is complete without a leash! One of the classiest leashes around is the Hyde Leash from Best in Park.

The Hyde Leash is made from natural jute strapping and beautiful leather strapping and trim. This beautiful leash is neutral enough that it can go with pretty much anything.

The best thing to go with a leash and a collar would be a great tag. There are no better tags on the market today than those made by blanketID.

I have waxed poetic about the pawesome blanketIDs before, but it’s always nice to have a refresher. BlanketIDs offer a unique form of protection as each tag comes with a code that links to a personal profile you fill out about your pet. If your pet were to be found by his or herself, the findee would just have to enter the code into the blanketID site to find your contact info, your pet’s specific needs if any, and what ever else you choose to include. Plus, if you report your pet missing on the site, an alert email with your pets photo and your contact information goes out to all SPCAs, animal hospitals, shelters, and other blanketID members in your area.

Finally, what dog doesn’t like a little bling? I know I do! That’s why I absolutely adore the Cupcake Cutie Charm from Eco-Pup.

This may just be the cutest charm I have ever seen. Plus it’s nickel and lead-free which is probably good if your dog decides it really looks good enough to nibble on.

Again, if I left out any absolutely spectacular items, please leave a comment.

Happy tail wags!

Pru’s Wooftastic Gift Guide: Clothes

13 Dec

It’s that time of the year again. Time to drag a living tree inside, time the watch the humans drive themselves crazy with running here and there to this party and that, and time for presents! Presents are very, very important, especially to those selfish little dogs like me. I have already submitted my list (okay, more like a book) to Santa Paws featuring all my most wanted items. Obviously I have to share my “Prudence Approved” gifts with my friends in hopes they get inspired to buy for their own pups, but since there are so many, I will be splitting the list up into different sections. Today it’s one of my all time favorite things (now I sound like that Oprah human); CLOTHES!

First up, Eco-Pup Dog Clothing. You have read my many written praises about Eco-Pup, so obviously they made my gift guide. My top pick? The Gift Hoodie of course!

Made of organic cotton velour, the Gift Hoodie features a really adorable embroidered snowflake along the body and the sleeve. I am quite partial to the chocolate color, but the lavender is equally appealing. My second favorite Eco-Pup item that I have yet to add to my ever expanding wardrobe is the City Coat. It is incredibly chic!

Something I have been urging my mom to buy me for Christmas is a Chilly Dog Sweater. Ever since sniffing out the Aloha Sweater at The Loyal Biscuit, I have been quite infatuated with their adorable sweaters. My favorite one, and what I’ve been asking for from both the humans and Santa Paws, is the Monkey Hoodie.

The Monkey Hoodie is just cheeky enough to be adorable, but not too adorable to be sickening. Plus I just love the fact that there are ears on the hood! All of the Chilly Dog Sweaters are made from mostly free-range sheep wool that is chemical free, natural dyes, and are completely hand-knit.

If you haven’t yet noticed, I’m a girl dog and tend to like things that edge to the girlier side of things. Something that completely fits that bill is the Pup’s Pinafore from Anthropologie.

This sweater dress is frilly, but it’s hardy enough to keep a pup warm on a chilly day. The Pup’s Pinafore would also make the perfect Christmas dress for some lucky pup.

Last but certainly not least is all the cl0thing at my mom and not-related aunt Angelica’s shop The Smiling Frog Pets.

Angelica and my mom spend a lot of time making sure their products are sturdily made and they try to upcycle as many materials as possible. Plus there clothes are just so darn adorable. I’m lucky enough to usually get the prototype of most of my mom’s made-to-order items (Leo get’s his mom’s), but sometimes there are one-of-a-kind items that I really wish I could have. While the shipping date for international items has passed, the US shipping date is the 18th, so there is still time to order.

Hope this helped spur up some ideas. If I missed any great dog clothing items that really should have been in this post, please leave a comment. Stay tuned tomorrow for my yummy treats gift guide!

Happy tail wags!
